Home Learning Guidance for Parents and Carers
Aim of Home Learning
We do not refer to ‘homework’ but home learning.
- Home learning helps to develop independent learning and to consolidate skills learned in class.
- Home learning gives parents/carers a chance to see what is being learned in school.
- Home learning promotes the parent and child working collaboratively.
- Tasks are achievable and manageable, therefore home learning should be a positive activity.
- If the school is closed in an emergency, or there is restricted access, home learning can be used to provide temporary education off site.
Home Learning Online
- Home Learning is provided online using the Google Classroom platform. Teachers will discuss with parents the need to have internet access to receive on-going school communications and homework. Senior Leaders, the FSW and Computing Lead will offer support
- Children without internet access will be supported to complete homework, for example given paper copies.
- The child’s Google Classroom username and password must be kept safe and secure
- If parents face any difficulties logging in or using Google Classroom please get in touch via info@maryland.newham.sch.uk and we can help you.
- Parents must log out of any of your personal gmail accounts on your device before accessing Google Classroom, as having two accounts active at once can cause technical problems. If you use a tablet or a phone you may find it easier to download the app.

What is Home learning?
-
relates to the learning that has taken place in the classroom prior to the time that it is set, except at times when home research or pre-learning may be particularly beneficial.
-
is differentiated, according to the ability of the child. English and Mathematics may require age appropriate support from parents / carers.
-
is acknowledged by the teaching assistant prior to the next week’s Home Learning being given out.
-
includes guidance, including examples, to children and parents/carers so that all concerned are clear about the requirements of their learning tasks. All teachers are sensitive to home situations (e.g. availability / access to resources / pastoral needs) and will amend activities if it is deemed necessary.
Maths:
Maths online: Numbots, Mathletics, Times Table Rockstars. If children do not have access, home learning will be issued on paper or in exercise books.
English: Spelling, grammar and handwriting is given every Friday (Yr 1-6) and is expected to be completed by the following Wednesday.
Reading
Reading Records are…
-
given to every child from Nursery – Year 6
-
monitored and acknowledged by the Teaching Assistant regularly
-
include a guide of how to fill them in effectively (With example statements and clear expectations)
-
support for parents to read with / listen to their child read, in-line with the expectations set in the Home Learning grid. When children are at the early stages of acquiring English, parents / carers are expected to read to their child and discuss the pictures and the text together.
-
An opportunity for parents to comment in and/or sign Reading Records on a weekly basis and use this as a way to communicate any concerns / progress the child has been making in Reading. They provide example statements in the Reading Records as a guide on how to fill them in effectively
Parents / Carers will be expected to:
-
Provide an appropriate setting, and necessary equipment, so their child / children can complete their Home Learning with the minimum amount of distraction / disruption.
-
Seek support and discuss any concerns with the class teacher if required.
-
Praise the efforts of their child / children to motivate the child
-
Parents must notify the school of any impending absence. Additional Home Learning is not set for children who are absent from school because of holidays taken during term time. Any missed Home Learning set during the absence will be kept and given to the child to complete on their return to school.
